What this site is and how you can use it in class. Everything here is free to use.

What this is

A free, independent site for learning the text types of the written English Matura (AHS and BHS, B2), from the 5th class to the Matura itself. Students use it in class, for homework and before Schularbeiten. It was built by Bernhard Gmeiner, an English teacher in Vienna, together with Claude, an AI model by Anthropic. It is based on the official SRDP documents: the B2 assessment scale (2023 revision), the descriptions of the text types, and the rules on word count and the veto. From these it builds guides, model texts, quizzes and practice tools for students working on their own.

There are no accounts and no tracking. Progress is saved only in the student’s own browser.

Use it freely

You may use everything here in class: project it, share links to single sections, print or copy the PDFs, or put the URL on Moodle, Google Classroom or MS Teams. You do not need to ask. A short mention of the source is welcome but not required.

Four ideas for your classroom

Task bank for Schularbeit practice

The Matura-style tasks in the task bank come with input material and operators, ready for timed writing. The random button picks a topic in one click.

Mock exam in class

The mock exam suggests a full set of tasks for AHS or BHS and runs the exam clock. Afterwards each student checks their text in the self-check.

Self-check in pairs

Before texts reach your desk, students run them through the self-check and rate themselves on the four official criteria. Pairs compare their ratings first and discuss where they differ.

Study plan before a Schularbeit

In the study plan, students enter the date of the Schularbeit and the text types, and get a day-by-day plan: guide, model text, a practice text, self-check. For the Matura there are four-week, two-week and seven-day plans.

Writing together in class: Writing Room

Writing Room is a free projector tool from the same author, for the 1st to the 8th class (Schulstufe 5 to 12, A1 to B2). The class builds a model text together, one decision at a time. Students vote with A–D cards, and when they pick a trap, the “editor” rejects it and explains why. From the 5th class on, the reason names the SRDP criterion. Layout, paragraphs and phrases follow this guide.

Every pack for the 5th to 8th class ends with a link and a QR code to the matching page here, so students can carry on at home: for most packs the guide, the model texts and the quiz for that text type, for stories and reviews the paragraph exercises. No account, nothing to install.

Found a mistake?

Corrections from colleagues help a lot. If a fact, a model text or a quiz answer looks wrong, send a short e-mail and name the section. More about me at bernhardgmeiner.com.
